United Technologies Corporation (UTC) wanted to find a way to supercharge the impact of its innovation team. As a large, multinational organization, training everyone would be difficult, so UTC defined a two-week, onsite training program to develop innovation “catalysts” across business units. Nominated team members were charged with learning a human-centered design approach to implement in their own strategic projects.
Cooper Professional Education was tapped to rally the teams and support the catalysts in applying the processes and skills through coaching. After our coaches participated in the training, they worked closely with cohorts of catalysts across North America, France, and Germany, who hailed from different companies within UTC.
Over 10 months, the coaches led biweekly calls as well as asynchronous and customized one-on-one coaching — providing new tools, feedback on presentations, and a holistic practitioner perspective. They supported the catalysts in each step of applying UTC’s innovation approach to their processes. Following the coaching engagement, many of the projects that were conceived as a result of the training program are well underway.
