Accu-med (formerly Shared Healthcare Systems, or SHS) provides software solutions and services for the senior healthcare market. In 1998, SHS engaged Cooper to help design their next-generation healthcare information system. This would be the first system to provide true integration of clinical, financial, and case management information, allowing comprehensive management of long-term healthcare facilities.
Cooper designed a product that not only improved the efficiency of healthcare facilities, but also helped improve the quality of care given to their residents. The system needed to help facility staff make sense of data as well as capture it. To address these important issues, Cooper designed the following integrated tools:
- a clinical interface to track resident progress, identify particular treatments and conditions, and analyze clinical trends across the facility
- a financial interface for business office personnel to manage resident accounts and complex healthcare billing
- a case management interface with powerful tools for case managers to help maximize resident care and minimize costs to their families
- tools for facility managers that let them see real-time status of their entire facility at a glance
Cooper's solution delivered benefits across the board:
- nurses can easily track and monitor resident status and trends, allowing them to spend less time shuffling paper and more time treating residents
- business managers stay on top of overdue accounts and billing deadlines
- case managers have analytical tools for optimizing the care of the residents and evaluating tradeoffs
- facility managers have a clear window into the full operation of their business
Since the product's announcement in October 2000, nearly 400 facilities have eagerly signed up for SHS's Orcas system. Customers have lined up to get the software, which can unify and expedite healthcare delivery processes in ways they never before thought possible.
