GoldMail is a startup whose application brings email messages to life by combining voice recordings with images. Their plan was to create a pair of products out of their prototype system: a full-featured professional version that would require a paid subscription, and a simplified free version that would be supported through advertising and act as a viral promotion for the paid version. Based on early testing with their prototype, GoldMail knew that although people loved the product once they had experience with it, they needed help getting started.
GoldMail asked Cooper to help make the tool simple, approachable, and fun to use. Cooper delivered strategic business guidance and a design that could be built immediately, while also providing direction for future generations of the GoldMail product.

Cooper interviewed individuals from GoldMail's target market and developed a set of personas to help stakeholders understand users’ needs and goals. Based on this research, Cooper helped GoldMail refine their product strategy by identifying a compelling experience that would drive viral adoption of the free version, as well as a set of value-added features that would encourage professional users to pay a subscription fee. Cooper also helped GoldMail define ways to incorporate advertising in the free product without alienating potential users.
Cooper created a design for the GoldMail products that helped even first-time users create vibrant messages quickly and easily, while also providing graceful behaviors for creating more complicated messages.

Creating a slide can be accomplished easily with one click by selecting the desired option.
The steps for creating a GoldMail are simple:
- Create slides using images from your desktop or the contents of your clipboard, or create a text slide
- Record the GoldMail message using simple Record and Stop buttons, navigating through your slides sequentially or selecting them in any order as you record
- Preview your GoldMail as it will appear for your recipients
- Share the final GoldMail with contacts from your email address book or post it online

Cooper's visual interface design enhances the GoldMail products with an interface that is instantly recognized as simple, trustworthy and inspiring. These attributes contribute to a positive first impression and greater adoption.
GoldMail knew it would be valuable to let business users include Word and Excel documents in their messages, but struggled with how to present these effectively within the constraints of the GoldMail viewer.
To solve this problem, Cooper designed elegant cropping and highlighting behaviors that made it easy for users to focus on the relevant parts of documents included in a message.

Emphasis tools help highlight sections of a page, or crop the page and "zoom in" on an important paragraph of text.
Cooper's friendly, intuitive design means GoldMail customers can be successful starting with their very first GoldMail message, which is the key to viral adoption of the GoldMail product. CNET's Rafe Needleman raves, "I've seen other multimedia presentation products, but never one as drop-dead easy as this...It's a more natural authoring environment than any other I have used." The San Francisco Examiner describes response to the product as “overwhelming.”
